This summer Fiskerstrand Verft will deliver the first out of two LNG powered fish feed carriers, the “With Harvest”, to the owner Egil Ulvan Rederi. The vessel concept is tailor made by the Norwegian ship designer Multi Maritime in close cooperation with Egil Ulvan Rederi, based on functional requirements from Marine Harvest ASA. The vessels are assigned to a long term charter party with Marine Harvest ASA. The Ship of the Year candidate will feature a brand new cargo handling system by Graintec.
The “With Harvest” and her sister vessel will be tailor made for transporting fish feed from the factory in Bjugn, currently under construction, to fish farms along the coast of Norway in a highly efficient, economical and environmental friendly way.
The vessel is designed for lowest possible environmental footprint to air and sea which was of major importance for Marine Harvest as the charterer. The LNG-gas-electric propulsion system has a major impact to the reduced carbon footprint, and the vessel is designed to run on pure LNG in all operations, even on DP.
The vessel will feature a new closed loop loading and offloading solution developed by Graintec in cooperation with Multi Maritime, the ship owner and the charterer Marine Harvest.
The cargo handling system is a new technology developed for a seamless co-operation with the land based fish feed processing plant currently under construction at Bjugn in Mid-Norway.
The “With Harvest” will be loaded by single closed point at top of the cargo holds and distributed to the cargo holds onboard by a conveyor system at both starboard and portside of the vessel. The closed point will protect the local environment from both dust and odor together with a filter on the air extraction.
The cargo holds will be emptied through a conveyor system in the bottom of the vessel and lifted to the top of the wheelhouse by an elevator. From the elevator another conveyor system is transporting the fish feed to the unloading crane and further to the storage position of the different fish farms while vessel is kept in position on DP mode.
The loading and unloading is remote controlled and monitored during the effective cargo handling, loading on capacity of 300 t/h and unloading on capacity 200 t/h. The unloading crane has an outreach of more than 25 meters.
For increased efficiency bunkering of LNG is performed simultaneously with loading of cargo.
In 2012, Norled won the contract to build and operate the world’s first battery driven ferry on the Lavik-Oppedal route in southwest Norway. He ferry will be delivered from the Fjellstrand shipyard in October and commence operation 1st of January 2015. Due to the high level of innovation in the project, the battery powered ferry is one among three candidates for the Ship of the Year 2014 Award.
Battery technology has developed quickly during recent years, reducing both weight and cost. The success has its roots within the automotive industry, which have made the technology available for use in other areas, like in the shipping industry.
The large number of fjords and islands in Norway make several crossings suitable for battery operation. A study made by the Fjellstrand shipyard shows approx. 40 potential crossings that, in the future, could be operated by battery driven ferries.
Through collaboration with some of the industry’s main players, the world’s first battery driven car ferry is now under construction at Fjellstrand and will start operating 1st of January 2015.
The world’s first large all-electric car ferry is a 100% battery driven catamaran in aluminium. The 80-meter long vessel will be able to carry 120 cars and 360 passengers across the Sognefjord between Lavik and Oppedal.

The ferry will run 34 times each day, with a crossing time of 20 minutes. Time at port is 10 minutes, time which will be used to fully charge the 1MWh lithium-polymer battery pack on board.
This amount of electric power delivered in such a short time is far beyond the capacity of the electrical grid serving in the villages of Lavik and Oppedal. The solution is to install battery buffers at both ports. These batteries can be continuously charged from the grid with 250 kW, then rapidly provide a quick dump to the ferry’s batteries.
The formal naming ceremony of M/V “Juanita” took take place in Leirvik, Stord on 20th May. Godmother was Unni Gjellesvik from Statoil. “Juanita” is of SALT 100 design, the very first design from Salt Ship Design.
M/V “Juanita” was taking a day off from a busy schedule in the North Sea. Her naming ceremony was a celebration marked with speeches of praise – from the shipowner, naval architects and shipbuilders.
Geir Skeie, the renowned Norwegian chef who won the Bocuse d’Or in 2009, was serving up the world’s best fish soup to more than 700 guests.
Captain Tommy Antonsen was visibly proud. – Yes, we are satisfied. Our crew has thoroughly tested the propulsion system; “Juanita” is powered by shaft-in-shaft, contra-rotating propellers. And we have seen her cargo handling in practice. Both systems function exactly as they should. In addition, we’re impressed by how quiet she is.
PSV “Juanita” was delivered from Kleven Verft, Ulsteinvik on 16 April 2014 and has already entered into her two-year charter party with Statoil.
The 2014 Ship of the Year award is approaching, and three strong candidates have been chosen on the basis of a wide variety of nominations by our readers. In the time ahead the jury will evaluate technical information about the vessels in an attempt to decide upon a worthy winner. The candidates are undoubtedly great representatives of innovation.
The 2014 Ship of the Year award will be presented during Hamburg´s SMM trade fair in September. The award itself will most likely be handed over by the Norwegian Minister of Trade, Monica Mæland, at the Norwegian pavilion hosted by the trade organization Norwegian Maritime Exporters.
As usual the jury consists of Skipsrevyen´s Editor-in-chief Asle Strønen, the former Managing Director of The Norwegian Shipowners Association Rolf Sæther, as well as the Managing Director of Norwegian Shipyards Sales and Marketing Organization Birger Skår.
The jury will now focus on the evaluation of the different vessel´s specification and technical complexity. To win this prestigious award the vessels are required to represent a high level of innovation, and must have been built at a Norwegian shipyard. The three chosen candidates are as follows;
YN 361 at Kleven Verft
The biggest size and price tag is not always the best recipe for a Ship of the Year nomination, and M/V “Juanita” built at Kleven Verft, is a great example of this. This platform supply vessel was delivered to the owner Ugland Offshore April 16, and immediately started operations for the charterer Statoil. The nomination is reflected in the new propulsion system developed by Scana Propulsion, Inpower and Salt Ship Design, as well as the cargo tank solution delivered by Framo.
YN 1696 at Fjellstrand
This autumn Fjellstrand will deliver the world´s first fully battery powered ferry to the owner Norled. This is a pioneer project that has generated a lot of international attention. Siemens is an integral part of the project and supplies among other things the complex power systems. The new ZeroCat design has the potential to revolutionize ferry transport, and the expectations are high.
